A historic library standing as a beacon of knowledge and heritage in Mumbai since 1847.
In 1847, a group of young mechanics and foremen of the Royal Mint and Government Dockyard formed an association to promote knowledge and learning. Their mission was to establish a library and a museum, dedicated to mechanical models and architectural designs.
Sir David Sassoon, a renowned banker and philanthropist, donated ₹60,000 to establish the library on the Southern Esplanade.
The stunning Venetian Gothic structure was completed, soon becoming a landmark in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda district.
The institute was officially renamed the David Sassoon Library & Reading Room, continuing its mission of knowledge-sharing.
Now one of Mumbai’s oldest institutions, the library serves students, professionals, and literature lovers, also hosting events like the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.
